Living in a tropical country close to the equator where sunlight is available for 50% of the day, one cannot stress enough the importance of wearing sunscreen for skin health, overall reduction of skin concerns like melanoma, hyperpigmentation, and hastening of signs of skin aging which is associated with UVA rays. On top of that are more physically irritating and dangerous concerns caused by UVB rays such as sunburns (erythema), and production of melanoma, which is a form of skin cancer.
Gone should be the days of sedentary lifestyles, and subjecting our bodies to all-nighters, unmoderated alcohol consumption, and processed or sugar-rich food. All these factors have proven time and time again through numerous scientific studies to be the main culprits driving our poor immune system, and that serve to usher in chronic disease.
There is so much space between the words we speak, and in the events of our days, that go by unappreciated and poorly processed, and this is where the benefit of three cycles of good quality sleep really come into play. In the moments between the meetings and the phone calls, where we’re able to put our bodies into a parasympathetic state, there is a huge opportunity for creative capacity, spiritual wellness, and subconscious processing that is going to be available to us if are able to get that third cycle of sleep.
Our brain remains biologically active while we sleep. In fact, it demands 50% of our calorie intake during sleep, much of which goes into memory processing, storage, and emotional detoxification in the brain. When we start to disrupt REM sleep, we see an accumulation of emotional trauma, emotional stress, unprocessed emotional memory, coupled with a poor processing and consolidation of long term memory.
